「あれこれ」って英語でなんていうの？

日本語で漠然と色んなものを指すときに「あれこれ」って言いますよね。

あれこれ考えても仕方がない。

や

あれこれ妄想する。

の「あれこれ」です。

ひとつ目は

this and that

です。

あれ(that)とこれ(this)の順序が逆になっています。

There’s no point in thinking about this and that.
(あれこれ考えても仕方がない。)

There’s no point in thinking about this or that.
(あれこれ考えても仕方がない。)

andの代わりにorにしても、あれやこれやの意味にになります。

もう一つは

one thing or another

です。

I’m busy with one thing or another.
(なんだかんだ（あれこれ)忙しいです。)

He always complains about one thing or another.
(彼はいつもなにかしら(あれこれ)不平を言っています。)

もちろん「あれこれ」を「色んなもの」「たくさんのもの」の意味のままvarious thingsやmany thingsと置き換えることもできます。

We talked about various things all night.
(私たちは一晩中いろんなことについて話しました。)

We talked about one thing or another all night.
(私たちは一晩中あれこれ話しました。)

言葉にすると印象が違いますね。
